Sex or Gender Identity—Which Is a Better Predictor of Sports Performance?

Sometimes a study is published with conclusions that are so obvious and common sense, one wonders why the study needed to be done in the first place! Consider a recent study looking at “race times achieved by non-binary athletes.” I’m sure you’ll be shocked (I say that tongue in cheek, of course!) to discover that the study found there’s a “sex gap in race times” and that “sex could be a better predictor of sports performance than gender identity.”

So biological sex (as determined by our chromosomes) matters more than subjective “gender identity” when it comes to sports? What a surprise! Who could have supposed that men being taller on average, having a larger lung capacity, larger heart, and bigger muscles on average would help them run faster than women?

It should be obvious to everyone that whether one was created as a male or as a female makes a big difference in many ways—including athletic performance!

It should be obvious to everyone that whether one was created as a male or as a female makes a big difference in many ways—including athletic performance! It should be obvious because God has designed males and females differently so they can fulfill their unique roles as they together have dominion over creation. That’s why we’ve had separate men’s and women’s sports for decades—because we know there’s a difference between men and women! It’s obvious (even a small child knows the difference, even if many politicians do not!) and built into the created order by God.

Studies like the one above from King’s College London are only considered “necessary” because we live in a world that has rejected the obvious truth from both God’s Word and creation. The result of abandoning God’s design for male and female in favor of a subjective identity based in one’s feelings is, well, utter foolishness that overlooks reality.

Studies like this one will continue to confirm the truth we know from God’s Word—men and women are not the same, and simply declaring oneself to be a male or a female doesn’t change reality. Truth is found in God’s Word and, ultimately, in the person of Jesus Christ, who gives those who come to him a new identity—not rooted in self but in being made a new creation in Christ Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:17) in his image to glorify God.
