It’s always great to get to report on good news! And that’s what I get to write about today—a righteous decision by our US Supreme Court (well by a majority) that will protect children.
In a much-anticipated decision, SCOTUS decided 6–3 to “uphold Tennessee’s law protecting minors from undergoing so-called ‘gender transitions,’ including surgeries and puberty blocking or cross-sex hormone drugs for children under age 18.”
This bill, which was signed into law in 2023, states:
A healthcare provider shall not knowingly perform or offer to perform on a minor, or administer or offer to administer to a minor, a medical procedure if the performance or administration of the procedure is for the purpose of: (A) Enabling a minor to identify with, or live as, a purported identity inconsistent with the minor’s sex; or (B) Treating purported discomfort or distress from a discordance between the minor’s sex and asserted identity.
This law protected children from irreversible, painful surgeries and body-damaging drugs
In other words, this law protected children from irreversible, painful surgeries and body-damaging drugs. Who knows how many children have been spared a lifetime of regret and misery because of this law (studies show the vast majority of children outgrow feelings of gender dysphoria if they don’t begin a social and medical transition. Studies also show that surgeries and hormones don’t actually help!). I wonder how many lawsuits will one day be filed by those who had such surgeries and realize later how destructive they were.
Of course, the law was challenged, reaching all the way to the Supreme Court. And praise the Lord, SCOTUS made the right decision—a decision that will protect vulnerable children. And this doesn’t just impact the state of Tennessee—more than 20 other states, including our state of Kentucky, have passed similar bills that will now stay in place.
What’s sad to me is the Tennessee bill was challenged by three families, a physician, and the Biden administration. Presumably, those families have a child who identifies as transgender.
So rather than helping their child come to understand that God created them male or female, in his very image, and that their identity comes from their Creator (as we will be teaching in our coming Radiance exhibit at the Creation Museum), these parents chose to sue their state to try to make sure their child could pursue permanent, harmful medical interventions to force their body to match their disordered view of self.
What an abdication of their God-given role as parents who are to lead their child into truth, not into error!
Yes, God’s Word is clear on this issue (and it’s confirmed by observational science):
Male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:27)
