New Study Finds Our Climate Is More Complex Than Previously Thought

Would you be surprised to learn that there’s a lot about earth’s climate that we don’t really fully understand yet? You probably wouldn’t be—after all, the deeper we look, the more complicated and complex God’s creation is! Well, that’s what scientists discovered in a new study quantifying sulfur emissions from plankton—apparently these emissions impact climate change much more than previously thought.

These marine emissions oxidize in the upper atmosphere and form aerosols that then reflect heat back into outer space. Because of the staggering numbers of plankton in the ocean, the combined effect of their emissions is so significant that they become involved in cloud formation. And when that happens, the “cooling effect is magnified . . . with an effect opposite to, but of the same magnitude as, that of the well-known warming greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide or methane.”

This new study reveals marine sulfur emissions are at least 25% higher than previously thought! That’s a pretty massive change to current climate models. And it’s a reminder that there’s so much we still don’t know about God’s creation. The predictions made by models are only as good as the models. If there are unknowns, or variables we simply couldn’t measure before, it will dramatically impact the results of the model. That’s one reason why climate models consistently make wrong predictions.

It’s a reminder that there’s so much we still don’t know about God’s creation.

Next time you see a doomsday headline about climate change, stop and remember that those predictions are based on models (involving numerous assumptions and extrapolations). Our climate, designed by God, is incredibly complex, and there’s still so much we’re learning about it.
