Planning with a Living Trust

Do you ever wonder what the future holds? While it’s impossible to know or control what happens in the future, Christians can rest in knowing that the Lord works all things together for our good (Romans 8:28). Essentially, you transfer your property and assets to a trustee (you can serve as your own trustee during your lifetime). The trustee is required to follow the provisions of a written trust agreement that identifies who will receive the income and assets. During your lifetime, you can continue receiving income from the assets, and you can distribute the assets back to yourself at any time.

One of the advantages of a living trust is that it can be used to bypass probate, since technically the assets put into the trust are owned by the trustee, not you personally. When you die, the (successor) trustee can transfer your property directly to your heirs and beneficiaries without going through probate. Also, unlike wills, which go through probate, the assets transferred through a living trust do not become a matter of public record.
