Reformation Day, War in the Middle East, and Our Calling as Christians

Europe at the time of the Protestant Reformation was in turmoil—politically, spiritually, and economically. It was in this time of unrest and turbulence that God chose to raise up Martin Luther and the other Reformers to return people to the truth and authority of his Word and the one true gospel. And really, this parallels our day.

In America (really, across the Western world), we’re living in times few of us have ever lived through (though such times have been common throughout history!). Economically, many are struggling. Spiritually, the church is divided, and there’s so much doctrinal and theological confusion. And politically, well, that’s a mess! Much of the church is very lukewarm.

Whether or not it will last remains to be seen, but God is doing something—and we pray it’s a new reformation!

Many people don’t know what to do, and that helplessness seems to be driving an interest in Christianity (or at least spirituality) and a hunger for truth, particularly among the younger generations. Whether or not it will last remains to be seen, but God is doing something—and we pray it’s a new reformation! We certainly need one!

Today is Reformation Day, when we remember the events that birthed the Protestant church over 500 years ago. And it’s a reminder that we need another reformation today; we need a return to the truth and authority of God’s Word without compromise. That’s what will make a difference in this nation!

The answer is always the truth of God’s Word and the gospel. We’re in a spiritual battle. And that’s why, ultimately, just like at the time of the Reformation, the issues of our culture won’t be solved by human means.

One example is the war in Israel and President Trump’s recent peace deal—it’s certainly something to celebrate, but ultimately, we’re still in a spiritual battle and it’s not yet over. You can hear my thoughts on that in this recent video on my YouTube channel:

Yes, we will continue to live in turbulent times until Jesus returns, but the answer in the meantime is to do what Christ commanded us and what we celebrate on Reformation Day that the Reformers did: contend for the faith, preach the gospel, and make disciples as salt and light in a dying world. And that starts with boldly standing on biblical truth  .  .  . from the very first verse.

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,
Ken
