Late on Monday, we received the news that Dr. John MacArthur, well-known expository Bible teacher and pastor at Grace Community Church, had gone into the presence of the Lord after battling pneumonia. He was 86 and had pastored his church faithfully since 1969.
I first met Dr. MacArthur around 35 years ago when I spoke at a creation seminar at his church. Years later, when the Creation Museum was under construction, he was kind enough to record a promotional video for the museum encouraging people to visit, and he himself was one of the earliest visitors, touring the brand-new museum two or three weeks after we opened in 2007. Later, in 2018, he spoke in Legacy Hall at the Creation Museum for one of our Answers for Pastors conferences (themed “Taking Back the Bible’s Clarity”), and he toured the Ark Encounter.

As long as we’ve known Dr. MacArthur, he’s been a staunch creationist, even teaching a whole series on Genesis in which he declared himself a young-earth (biblical) creationist. Unlike so many pastors, he understands the issue isn’t really the age of the earth—it’s biblical authority. Will we start with God’s Word, or will we start with man’s ideas?
Just last year, I appeared on his podcast, The Art of Discernment, to talk about biblical authority and the book of Genesis. You can watch that interview below:
I also interviewed him about his Ark visit back in 2018. You can watch that here:
He leaves behind a legacy of faithfully proclaiming God’s Word.
I was saddened to hear of Dr. MacArthur’s passing and ask for you to join with me in praying for his family and his church family. He leaves behind a legacy of faithfully proclaiming God’s Word (of course, he often preached on denominational issues we do not take a position on as a ministry, but regardless of where you stand on such issues, it’s obvious Dr. MacArthur loved God’s Word and emphasized its authority in all areas—and we can all appreciate that!). That legacy will continue with his over 200 books, his study Bibles, the Legacy Standard Bible translation he loved, his many recorded sermons and programs, and the lives his teaching impacted.
Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints. (Psalm 116:15)
Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,
Ken
