You may have been shocked to learn that $16 billion was spent on the recent elections in the USA with Vice President Kamala Harris spending $1 billion—yes, “billion” with a “b”!—on her failed presidential campaign. It’s a jaw-dropping amount of money to have raised and then spent in such a short amount of time. But whenever I see news items about such massive amounts of money, I am reminded of the criticism we received when we were building the Ark Encounter.
When we announced the Ark Encounter project and its cost, we were heavily criticized in the media, by atheist bloggers, and by certain Christian/church leaders for spending millions of dollars building a life-size Noah’s Ark instead of giving the money to the poor or some other cause. We even wrote an article and a blog post defending ourselves!
But, you know, those same news outlets, atheists, and Christian leaders aren’t criticizing the Harris or other campaigns for their spending. Why the hypocrisy? Well, because it’s not really the money they object to—it’s the message!
I highlighted this in a short video we made for YouTube recently:
We care about the poor, and we even use our attractions to raise money to help feed the hungry while giving them the most important message of all—the saving gospel!
Of course, as we’ve highlighted over the years, we care about the poor, and we even use our attractions to raise money to help feed the hungry while giving them the most important message of all—the saving gospel!
Just as two examples, our massive fair trade markets at both attractions provide work and an income for artisans living in impoverished countries, and we also partner with Children’s Hunger Fund to feed hungry children around the world both through our Buy a Meal, Give a Meal program at our attractions and our Answers VBS Missions Moment (providing millions of meals). (I encourage you to check out Children’s Hunger Fund and consider giving to their 1 million meals goal—they are a wonderful, gospel-centered outreach.)
And, of course, all the funds used to build the Ark came from generous donors—the same sorts of people who generously donate to other Christian ministries, including ones that feed the poor!
But none of this really matters to our critics because their concern isn’t actually financial—it’s spiritual. They don’t like the message of the truth and authority of God’s Word or the gospel, so they stand in our way. But we’re thankful the Lord has enabled us to continue sharing his message despite opposition.
If you’d like to help us continue to do so and help fund three exciting projects, please visit our donate page. All gifts through the end of the year are matched dollar for dollar up to $8 million. Your gift makes a huge impact for eternity!
Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,
Ken
