The Ark Encounter’s Ararat Ridge Zoo has some new additions: a herd, or “muddle,” of guinea pigs! Meet Biscotti, Gingersnap, Macaroon, Samoa, and Snickerdoodle. These girls are now on display at Junior’s Zoo Adventure, a special children’s zoo we added to Ararat Ridge Zoo some time ago and, since opening, have been adding many different animals for kids to experience, including these new guinea pigs.
Here’s what the zookeepers shared with me about these new additions:
Guinea pigs are neither from Guinea nor are they pigs. They belong to the cavy created kind, which also includes capybaras, the world’s largest rodents. They were originally native to the Andes Mountains of South America and are important to the culture and lifestyle of indigenous people. They are now domesticated and can be found worldwide as pets. They’ve been selectively bred for 13 hair types and 20 different colors.
Sometimes they will “popcorn,” or leap, suddenly in the air when they are feeling energetic. They are extremely vocal, and social groups are noisy and spend a lot of time grooming each other. Guinea pigs are good swimmers and can remember complex paths to food, which are mostly grasses.
Although they are endearing, it’s very important to do your research before adopting guinea pigs, as they require a lot of work, space, and socialization.
Be sure to say hello to our muddle the next time you visit the Ark Encounter!
But these new animals aren’t the only zoo additions—we have more coming as our stunning new zoo at the Creation Museum, complete with a phenomenal outdoor stage for live animal programs, a wallaby walkabout, and new animals, will open in just a few weeks.
Plan your visit! Kids 10 and under visit free.
Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,
Ken
