It’s National Library Week—But Are Libraries Worth Celebrating?

This week is National Library Week in the United States, a week designed to promote library use and support. Now, public libraries have come under a lot of fire recently as many of them promote LGBTQ content (often pornographic in nature) and critical race theory to children and teens. And they ban many books that would be considered wholesome/family friendly. So, many Christians may wonder if libraries are really something worth using and supporting nowadays!

Well, your answer to that is largely going to depend on your local library. Some library boards are extremely woke, pushing sexual content and even hosting drag queen story hours for kids. Others are more conservative, putting fewer of those books on the shelves or at least not heavily promoting them. So every family has to use discretion and decide for themselves whether or not to use or support their local library.

National Library Week is a great time to consider what’s in your home or church library.

But National Library Week is a great time to consider what’s in your home or church library. Do you have apologetics resources for the whole family that will equip and encourage you to think biblically and be able to defend your faith? If not, here are a few of my favorites for both your home library and your church library (and if your church doesn’t have a library, this week would be a great time to consider starting one!).

Children:

  • Truths for Toddlers. You don’t have to wait for your kids to reach elementary school before you start teaching them about God and his Word—you can (and should!) start when they are just babies and toddlers! This large, sturdy book features five big truths about who God is, and it’s a fun way to engage even the littlest learners with truth and Scripture. Perfect for use at home or in a nursery class.
  • Crafted by God. Many public schools push Planned Parenthood materials, even at young grades. Help your children know the truth about the value of unborn life with this celebration of God’s incredible design of each and every human being, from the moment of fertilization.
  • Awesome Facts About Animals. Kids love fun facts about their favorite animals, but the books at the public library are going to include evolution and millions of years in their “fact” books. This book features fun facts coupled with biblical worldview teaching about creation.
  • Why Did God Make Me a Girl? And Why Did God Make Me a Boy? Many public libraries push transgender content (again, this content is often pornographic—even for kids!). With the Why Did God Make Me . . . ? books, you can help your kids understand God’s good design for them as either a boy or a girl and what that means for them.
  • Justin & Jessie Build a Biblical Foundation. Do your kids love story time? They’ll love following Justin and Jessie as they try to live for Jesus while facing tough, everyday situations. It’s a great way to show kids how God’s Word applies to their own lives.
  • Kids Answers. Our popular magazine for children (which comes free with an Answers magazine subscription) is now available as a stand-alone subscription—and kids love it! It’s filled with activities, science experiments, fun animal facts, biblical worldview teaching, apologetics, stories, and more.

Middle school:

  • Quick Answers to Tough Questions and Quick Answers to Social Issues. Kids are bombarded with anti-Bible teaching, both from a scientific and a moral/social perspective. These two books by Bryan Osborne are a great way to equip your kids, beginning in middle school, with answers to the questions of our day.
  • The 10 Minute Bible Journey. Help your kids explore God’s Word with this detailed, chronological overview of the Bible with apologetics and a devotional emphasis.
  • The Answers Books for Kids Complete Set. These are great for elementary- and middle-school-aged kids. They’ll love the answers to questions about science, the Bible, creation, evolution, and so much more.

Teens and adults:

  • Who Am I? Solving the Identity Puzzle. There might not be an issue impacting young people more these days than the identity issue. So many of them are asking, “Who am I?” Give them answers—and not just vague answers, specific answers for them as a male or as a female—that start in Genesis.
  • Dinosaurs, Dragons, and the Bible. People of all ages are fascinated by dinosaurs and dragons. Find out the truth in this exciting resource.
  • Creation to Babel: A Commentary for Families. This resource is designed for the whole family to use together. You’ll explore every question I’ve ever been asked about Genesis 1–11 (and that’s a lot of questions!) as you take a deep dive into the foundational chapters of God’s Word. It’s a wonderful way to lay a solid foundation in the hearts and minds of your children and yourself.

Now, those aren’t the typical resources you’ll find at your public library! But they are resources that will equip and encourage your family with answers from God’s Word. So if you can, utilize some of the resources offered by your local library, but be sure to feed your family a steady diet of the biblically rich resources you won’t find there but hopefully will be able to find in your own library or at your church.

Oh, and make sure books like the above are in your local Christian school and homeschool libraries.

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,
Ken
