Secular Review Says the Creation Museum Is “Absurd, but Also Absurdly Fun”

Since the opening of the Creation Museum in 2007 and the Ark Encounter in 2016, we’ve seen hundreds of reporters and other media personnel come and tour the attractions, writing reviews or filming news segments about them. And they’re still coming! Just recently, two different media outlets published articles featuring the Creation Museum and mentioning the Ark Encounter—and they certainly had interesting things to say!

I’ll cover the second article in a later blog, so let’s look at the first article, which came from The Telegraph, a UK publication, emphasizing the state of Kentucky as a tourist destination that international travelers shouldn’t miss. After noting that British Airways now conveniently has direct flights into the Cincinnati airport (located here in Northern Kentucky), the author highlights a first attraction—the Creation Museum (well, he calls it “the infamous Museum of Creation”). He writes,

Like its sister attraction – a 500-ft replica of Noah’s Ark situated between Cincinnati and Louisville – the Museum of Creation attracted its share of snooty write-ups when it opened in 2016. The brainchild of an Australian evangelist called Ken Ham, it preaches a literal interpretation of the Book of Genesis. Which means dozens of exhibits picking a fight with everything from fossils to climate change, while making the case for the existence of dragons and the Biblical flood.

It’s absurd, but also absurdly fun. The full-scale animatronic dinosaurs certainly look incongruous grazing next to loincloth-wearing homo sapiens, but they’re more exciting to look at than anything in the National History Museum. I suspect you’ll struggle to find a child who would say otherwise.

He’s right about one thing: the Creation Museum is fun and kids love it.

Now, while the author gets a few things wrong—we’re the Creation Museum, not Museum of Creation; we opened in 2007 not 2016 (the Ark opened in 2016); and we don’t “pick a fight” with “fossils” and “climate change” but, rather, we disagree with the evolutionary interpretation of the evidence—he’s right about one thing: the Creation Museum is fun and kids love it (that’s one reason we offer all children 10 and under free admission)!

Even though he clearly thinks what we teach is “absurd,” I do appreciate his honesty about the quality and engaging nature of the museum exhibits—the Creation Museum is truly world-class! And really, what he wrote is a marketing piece for us. Over the years, I’ve heard many people say they read a news report about the Creation Museum, and to them, the fact secularists mocked it meant it must be good, so they visited.

What Else Is There in Kentucky?

The article further describes some of Kentucky’s tourist attractions, including Mammoth Cave, a fascinating system of over 400 miles of underground passageways and truly mammoth caverns; cities like Louisville and Lexington with a host of experiences to offer; and, of course, Kentucky’s bourbon industry, which gets a lengthy mention.

I agree with him that the Northern Kentucky area is not to be missed! Not only does this state host the world’s leading Christian themed attractions, but Kentucky is filled with gorgeous scenery and places to hike and explore. When you visit, consider enjoying BB Riverboats on the Ohio River, the Newport Aquarium, the National Museum of the US Air Force near Dayton, Ohio (which is free and one of my favorites), the Kentucky Horse Park, or the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati. Or explore God’s creation in incredible places like Red River Gorge (a favorite hiking spot of our astronomer Dr. Danny Faulkner) or Cumberland Falls State Resort Park (one of the few places where you can sometimes see a “moonbow,” a nighttime rainbow). All of these are within just three hours’ drive of our attractions.
