The Coronation of the King and the Return of the King of Kings

But whether Christ returns today or far in the future, we are to continue obeying his commands until he comes.

I’m often asked, given the insanity and evil in our Western culture, if I think we’re living in the end times. I always respond that we’re living closer to the end than anyone who has gone before us—we just don’t know how close! But whether Christ returns today or far in the future, we are to continue obeying his commands until he comes. We must:

• Contend for the faith (Jude 3)
• Proclaim the gospel (Mark 16:15)
• Engage in the business of the King of kings until he comes (Luke 19:13)
• Equip people (especially our children and grandchildren) with answers (1 Peter 3:15)
• Call compromising Christians, church leaders, and academics back to the authority of God’s Word, beginning in Genesis, and encourage them to stand boldly for God’s Word and to stop being lukewarm (Revelation 3:16)
• Be a watchman to warn people about what is happening (Ezekiel 33:6)
• Be salt and light to our children and the world (Matthew 5:13–16; Mark 9:50)
• Pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17)

Yes, that’s what we’re to do, trusting that Christ will continue—in all ages, all generations, and in every nation—to build his church, and the gates of hell will never prevail against it (Matthew 16:18). Evil may seem to have the upper hand, but Christ is King, is on his throne, is sovereign over everything, and he’s still saving people!

As the event of the coronation draws closer, many people are excited—after all, it’s been 70 years since a British monarch was last coronated! But so many of these people have no idea that the King of kings—the eternal King—has already been coronated, and their response to his rule and reign doesn’t just matter for a few exciting weeks—it matters for eternity.

Whoever has power over death has ultimate power.

The true King has always been King, but he chose to come to earth as a baby, truly God and truly man. He lived the perfect life that we can’t live and then chose to be coronated with a crown of thorns (a representation of the curse in Genesis 3:17–18), be nailed to a wooden cross, and suffer death for us. Through his death, the King took our sin upon himself, absorbing and fully satisfying the wrath of our just God against sin. Then he rose from the grave, victorious over death and sin, and now offers the free gift of eternal life with him, forgiveness of sin, and new life to all who will repent of their sin and trust in Christ alone for salvation. Whoever has power over death has ultimate power.
