Shackled By A Heavy Burden

by Dr. Georgia Purdom on March 29, 2011

This morning on my way to work an old Gaither classic came on the radio, “He Touched Me.” It was the very first line, which I made the title of this blog post, that really hit me. These past few weeks I have definitely felt “shackled by a heavy burden.”

The recent homeschool controversy has once again shed light on the rampant compromise in the church. I’m preparing to give two presentations at a secular university next week where some in the audience will likely not be in agreement with me. I’m also trying to get ready to venture to the Galapagos Islands at the end of May and need to spend some focused time on research. And to top it all off, soccer season has just started and my little girl will now be involved in a sport that involves many children all on field kicking and running wildly!

Although the song itself refers to salvation, God’s “touch” and presence are needed in our daily lives as we struggle with living in this fallen world. May these words comfort you today as they did me.

Verse 1:

Shackled by a heavy burden, 'Neath a load of guilt and shame. Then the hand of Jesus touched me, And now I am no longer the same.

Chorus:

He touched me, Oh He touched me, And oh the joy that floods my soul! Something happened and now I know, He touched me and made me whole.

Verse 2:

Since I met this blessed Savior, Since He cleansed and made me whole, I will never cease to praise Him, I'll shout it while eternity rolls.
