Did you know that evolutionary scientists can’t explain where space, time, matter, and energy came from? You might think, “Yes they have—the big bang!” But, by their own admission, the big bang model doesn’t tell us anything about how everything came from nothing. Rather, this model seeks to explain what happened immediately after the supposed big bang. That’s why a recent headline proclaimed, “The Big Bang says nothing about the creation of the cosmos.”
The article accompanying that headline states,
We are often told that the Big Bang is a theory of cosmic creation — that it tells us how the Universe was created out of nothing and went on to evolve into all the galaxies, stars, and planets. The problem with that characterization is that only the second part of it is true. Yes, what we call the Big Bang is a theory of cosmic evolution. But the Inflationary Universe standard model that guides cosmology says nothing about cosmic origins. The birth of space, time, matter, and energy is simply not there.
In other words, scientists don’t know how everything came from nothing (an idea that defies natural law and everything we observe). Some suggest an eternal universe, others a multiverse, and still others a cyclical universe. None of these ideas are scientific—all are theoretical ideas thrown around because, in the evolutionary view, there must be some way apart from God to explain life and the universe.
Now, some Christians will say, “I know what existed before the big bang—what caused the big bang. It was God! See, science confirms the Bible.” But is this a good apologetic?
The Bible doesn’t leave creation open-ended for us to figure out how and when it happened and then stick God in wherever we think he fits.
No, not at all. The Bible doesn’t leave creation open-ended for us to figure out how and when it happened and then stick God in wherever we think he fits. Rather, God tells us specifically how (by the power of his word) and even when (in six days about six thousand years ago [see below]) everything came to be—and it wasn’t with a big bang!
Here are just a few of the ways that big bang cosmology clashes with biblical cosmology—they absolutely are not compatible!
Don’t fall into the trap of trying to harmonize a pagan origin myth with the biblical account of creation. They don’t go together!
The article I mentioned above ended with this:
By itself, the Big Bang never tells us where it all comes from. If you want to know how the Universe was actually created, you need something else, something more … whatever mechanism you envision, it will be an addition to the Big Bang we have now, because that theory is silent on the question of creation.
Of course, we know what the “something else, something more” is—and it’s not an it but a he. And he’s not in “addition to the Big Bang.” The Something Else is entirely apart from the big bang because the Something Else is the Creator God of the Bible, and he created—not with a big bang, but by the power of his word over just six days.
God didn’t use the big bang to create—indeed, the big bang never happened. And cosmic origins don’t need to remain a mystery to anyone who is curious.
To sum all of this up: God didn’t use the big bang to create—indeed, the big bang never happened. And cosmic origins don’t need to remain a mystery to anyone who is curious. The Bible has already told us how everything came to be, and it begins with “In the beginning, God” (Genesis 1:1).
In the beginning (time) God created the heavens (space) and the earth (matter)!
By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible (Hebrews 11:3).
