Have you ever stopped to think about the wonder of life in the womb? From the microscopic stage to birth, so much growth and so many amazing changes take place, and yet right from fertilization, this is a brand-new person made in the image of God with his or her own unique set of DNA. It’s really quite amazing.
I won’t go into all the nuances and details of prenatal development in this blog post—though I encourage you to read more about them here or to visit our powerful Fearfully & Wonderfully Made exhibit at the Creation Museum—but it’s nothing short of miraculous how God forms each human being.
Scripture is clear about the value of human life.
Scripture is clear about the value of human life, as we are image bearers of the Creator (Genesis 1:27, 9:6); and it recognizes the unborn as fully human with their value and personhood recognized (e.g., Exodus 21:22–23; Job 31:15; Psalm 139:13–16; Luke 1:44). And observational science confirms this reality too. When you look at what really goes on during pregnancy, beginning at fertilization, there’s no excuse for dismissing an unborn child as a disposable “clump of cells.” To argue that personhood or “humanness” doesn’t begin until an arbitrary stage of development somewhere later along the line (or until birth) has no basis in biology, theology, or even logic. No, both science and Scripture bear out the truth that a new human life begins at fertilization.
And that’s why abortion is so terrible. Because it’s not just “terminating a pregnancy,” it’s murder—ending the life of an innocent person who bears the image of God, who is already fully human with his or her own DNA, and who is being “knitted together” by the Creator.
As many of you know, January is considered Sanctity of Life month, and I hope you’ll take some time in the coming weeks to consider the wonder of preborn life and its value in light of what God’s Word (as well as science) says about it.
And if you’d like a good resource to help your kids or grandkids (or yourself!) better understand the miracle of life in the womb, I highly recommend the book Crafted by God. This book, cowritten by our Dr. Georgia Purdom and Stacia McKeever, includes tons of information, full-color images, and interactive features like pull tabs and foldouts. Or if you’re looking for something more on a teen or adult level, our Fearfully & Wonderfully Made book, produced to accompany the Creation Museum’s pro-life exhibit, is also an excellent option. Both books are a really great way to introduce young people to what God’s Word and science have to say about the beginning of life and its extraordinary value.
For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. (Psalm 139:13–14)
Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,
Ken
