Free Speech Victory in Colorado

Good news out of the state of Colorado!

In an 8–1 decision, the Supreme Court struck down a Colorado law banning “conversion therapy” for minors. The law they struck down basically prohibited Christian counselors or therapists from using God’s Word to help minors with unwanted same-sex attraction and minors struggling with gender dysphoria.

In the opinion from the court, Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote,

We conclude that the courts below failed to apply sufficiently rigorous First Amendment scrutiny in this case. . . .

While the First Amendment protects many and varied forms of expression, the spoken word is perhaps the quintessential form of protected speech. And that is exactly the kind of expression in which Ms. Chiles [the Christian counselor] seeks to engage. . . .

Colorado’s law does not just regulate the content of Ms. Chiles’s speech. It goes a step further, prescribing what views she may and may not express.

These kinds of laws are not neutral; they are anti-Christian and based in the religion of humanism.

Yes, such laws prohibiting free speech—like what we see in a recent law that may soon pass in Canada—basically force everyone to abide by the government’s religion of sexual humanism. These kinds of laws are not neutral; they are anti-Christian and based in the religion of humanism (the idea that man is ultimate).

We are grateful that the Supreme Court has returned freedom of speech to Christian professionals in Colorado. But it’s a reminder that government and legislation are not the ultimate solution to any of our problems—laws are always changing based on who is in power. The ultimate hope for this nation, and for everyone, is the gospel of Jesus Christ and the truth of God’s Word. That has always been and always will be the solution for every social issue.

That hope and truth are the answer for anyone struggling with sexual sin or identity issues (we powerfully show this in our new exhibit Radiance at the Creation Museum) and for those struggling with any other sin.

The answer is always the gospel and the truth of God’s Word!

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,
Ken
