Before Noah’s flood, God said man’s days would be one hundred and twenty years. Now many people think this means that no one will ever live longer than one hundred and twenty years. But many people lived much longer than that after the flood. This number—120—is actually a countdown to God’s judgment on mankind at the time of the flood.

Now, this doesn’t mean it took that long to build the ark. The Bible tells us God commanded Noah to take his wife, sons, and sons’ wives onto the ark with him. Using the biblical data on when his sons were born, we can estimate it took between fifty-five and seventy-five years to build the ark … and then the flood judgment came.
