You know the history in Genesis is foundational to our major Christian doctrines. So what you believe about creation impacts how you view other biblical teachings.

For example, Scripture clearly teaches we’re all descended from Adam. Originally, God’s creation was perfect—free from sin and death. But Adam rebelled against God, and we sinned in Adam. We continue to sin, so the whole human race is in rebellion against God.

Now, you know, the doctrine of creation is foundational to the doctrine of original sin. When we get rid of a historical Genesis, the message of our sinful state and the gospel has to be changed to stay consistent.
