Have you ever watched a flock of birds and wondered how they pull off flight with so little effort? Well, multiple systems and parts must work together to get a bird into the air. All this week, we are going to look at the intricacies of flight.

When we think of what makes birds unique, we typically think of feathers. Now, these structures are marvels of engineering. They are lightweight but wind-resistant. The feathers are hooked together with a sliding joint by a system of barbs and barbules. This system acts like Velcro, incredibly strong yet flexible.
