The Ark was a HUGE ship.
The Ark was 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high (Genesis 6:15).
A cubit was based on the distance between a man’s elbow and his fingertips. Of course, that changes depending on the man! Researchers have studied the various cubit lengths in history and have determined that Noah most likely used a cubit of 20.4 inches. Based on that, the Ark was 510 feet long, 85 feet wide, and 50 feet tall!
Other scientists have studied the dimensions of the Ark and have determined that they were just right to provide a safe and comfortable ride for Noah through the floodwaters. In fact, the Ark had the same proportions as modern cargo ships, which are designed to safely navigate through the open ocean with big waves and fierce storms.
