King Josiah in the Bible had a choice to make: he could be like his father—the wicked King Amon—or he could choose to obey God. Even though he was young, Josiah chose obedience to God and tried to do what was right. But he didn’t know much about what pleased God and what didn’t.
Josiah knew he needed to obey God’s Word.
When a copy of the Book of the Law (part of the Bible) was found, Josiah had someone read it to him. Now he knew what was right and what was wrong! He knew he needed to obey God’s Word—but that wasn’t all. He wanted everyone in his kingdom to know the truth too! So he gathered the people and read the Book of the Law to them, then he and the people promised to obey God. God was pleased with King Josiah.
Reading the Bible isn’t enough! We have to do what it says, and we can’t do that by ourselves.
Today, we have all of God’s Word—the Bible. And like King Josiah, we need to read it. But reading it isn’t enough! We have to do what it says, and we can’t do that by ourselves. First, we must put on Jesus’ righteousness (by becoming a child of God), then the Holy Spirit will help us pursue righteousness by obeying his Word—not just because we should or because we have to, but because we want to please God.
And don’t forget, other people need to know the truth of God’s Word too. In fact, that’s one way we can obey God—by telling others about Jesus!
Take some time today to read God’s Word. As you do, ask him to help you obey what it says and to share the good news about Jesus with someone else.
