Homeschool families are like patchwork quilts—each its own version of color, pattern, and detail. Some homeschool families follow a detailed schedule. Others implement variety and flexibility, whether by preference or necessity. Whatever your patchwork schedule looks like, here are some tips for keeping it healthy.
1. Prioritize Scripture and prayer. Colossians 3:2 says, “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” Start your day with devotions and prayer. Use a good Bible curriculum that emphasizes biblical authority. I post scripture around my house to help me remember to pray continually and focus on the things above.
2. Work unto the Lord. Work is part of God’s big picture. Even before the corruption event, God gave Adam work to do. 1 Corinthians 10:31 says, “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” For students, their work includes their studies.
3. Practice rest and play. A combination of work, rest, and play is key. Balancing schoolwork and active fun looks different in every family. My daughter would balance school assignments with roller-skating breaks. My son would take breaks between subjects to play guitar. Make learning fun by encouraging active brain breaks between subjects. Keep a chart of your family’s activities throughout the week to inspire you.
4. Nourish with healthy food. We honor God when we eat healthy food. Physical foods nourish our bodies as spiritual food feeds our spirits. Matthew 4:4 says, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Consider assigning each family member a job necessary to making your family meals and then clean up together.
5. Be faithful. 1 Peter 5:7 says to cast our anxieties on God because he cares for us. Homeschooling takes hard work and perseverance. Don’t give up! You are doing good work, and our faithful heavenly Father will see you through.
If you’re looking for fun and educational field trip options, we have two upcoming events we think your students (and you!) will love! The Logos Theatre is returning to the Ark Encounter twice this school year. On select days November 12–23, C. S. Lewis’ world of Narnia will come to life in a stunning production of The Horse and His Boy. And in January 2025, Logos will be back on select days with John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress.
Both shows are incredibly done with skilled cast and crew, life-size (or larger-than-life) puppetry, intricate costumes, elaborately designed sets, and spiritual themes. Learn more and get your tickets at ArkEncounter.com/narnia and ArkEncounter.com/pilgrims.
