The family is the first and most fundamental institution God created when he made Adam and Eve and told them to be fruitful and multiply. Beginning in Genesis, and all throughout Scripture, we see the importance of family and the goodness of marriage, children, and grandchildren. So it shouldn’t surprise us that a new study has shown that grandparenting has health benefits.
God’s design of the family is a blessing because children and grandchildren are a blessing.
The study found that “grandparents who provided childcare scored higher on memory and verbal skills than those who did not.” It didn’t seem to matter how often the grandparents helped with the grandkids or what type of care they provided—all that mattered was that they were involved with their grandchildren.
Yes, God’s design of the family is a blessing because children and grandchildren are a blessing.
Grandchildren are the crown of the aged,
and the glory of children is their fathers. (Proverbs 17:6)
Beyond the health benefits for the grandparents and the help their involvement offers mom and dad, godly grandparents have a wonderful opportunity to leave a spiritual legacy as they help disciple that next generation. We see this in the life of the young pastor Timothy, whose faith was passed down to him from his grandmother Lois and mother, Eunice (2 Timothy 1:5). And Psalms tells us that one generation declares the works of God to the next (Psalm 145:4). If you’re a grandparent, I trust you take this responsibility seriously!
It’s always interesting when you see yet another study confirming what those with a biblical worldview knew all along—God’s design is good and leads to the flourishing of society.
Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,
