What would you make with 82 sheets of foam and a CNC machine? Well, our talented fabricators are turning those foam sheets into a beautiful, themed exterior for the ticketing building at our Welcome Center at the Ark Encounter.
Our skilled CNC operator is expertly crafting parts for the exterior elements of the ticketing building by machining 152 intricate foam pieces from 82 sheets of foam. Artists will install these pieces on the side of the building.
They will then carve the foam using knives, saw blades, coarse sandpaper, and even sharp rocks. Then it’ll all be carefully covered with a sticky loose-weave fiberglass mesh and adhesive cement, ensuring the details and weathering in the sculpted areas will remain. They’ll even add texture by stippling the cement with brushes.
After that cures, they’ll stipple the final gritty, waterproof acrylic coating over the carved “deterioration” with palette knives. Then an acrylic coating will be troweled on. And then the whole thing will be aged with washes in various shades of dark brown, rust, and cream, creating the look of an old weather-worn mud-and-plaster building.
Wow—that’s quite the process! The level of detail truly makes even our ticketing building a stunning work of art that seamlessly blends with the theming of our attractions. Our hard-working and dedicated staff do such an amazing job. God brought us an amazing design team to ensure our attractions are first-class in every way.
Our Welcome Center is set to open late this year. It will be a stunning addition to the Ark Encounter. Come and visit soon.
Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,
