It’s a “Secular-Yet-Spooky” Age

A few days ago, I highlighted a good news item in my blog—the vast majority of US teens claim to be motivated to learn about Jesus. Now, as I said in that blog post, that doesn’t mean teens are flocking to church pews, but it does mean there’s a spiritual openness that Christians can and should seek to use to plant seeds of truth. But this spiritual openness also means many teens are open to, well, anything.

A recent article described our present cultural moment as “secular-yet-spooky.” Our culture is still largely very secular, founded on man’s opinion and guided by feelings with little concern for what God or his Word would have us do. And yet, at the same time, our culture is “spooky,” obsessed in many ways with spirituality and open to “crystals and hexes, seances and saints, meditation and manifesting, angels and aliens, goop and God—the whole syncretistic bundle is out in the open now.”

Every person knows there’s a God but, apart from Christ, suppresses that truth in unrighteousness.

Every single person is made in God’s image and created for eternity. Every person knows there’s a God but, apart from Christ, suppresses that truth in unrighteousness. So it’s no surprise the hard atheistic materialism that was in vogue has given way to spirituality which says there must be meaning, purpose, and hope (all things atheism can’t supply) somehow and in some way.

But vague spirituality, interest in the occult mixed with Jesus, or meditation and positive affirmations won’t save anyone. What our culture is thirsting and hungering for so desperately is Jesus—who is the way, the truth, and the life. He is the living water and bread of life that satisfies.

As the article I quoted above says,

Something is happening. Christianity is having a moment. Our culture is shifting. Whether this change will be minor, temporary, or tectonic, we cannot know. Nor can we know where it will end—or even whether it will be good.

What we can say is that much that was certain is now up for grabs.

There’s a hunger and thirst that’s been absent for a long time in our nation. And only Christians have the solution. So be encouraged: Christ is building his church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it. So equip yourself with answers for why you believe what you believe and go out and boldly proclaim the gospel to all who will have ears to hear.

Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest. (John 4:35)

Let’s redeem the time while we are able.
