What Is That Square on Mars?

Well, no one knows—it’s only one photo! But it’s likely some kind of natural geological formation. Of course, many people are immediately jumping to the idea of a lost alien civilization or some other extraterrestrial activity. They see the two clean(ish)-cut corners as obvious evidence of design. And yet many of these same people reject God as the Creator.

Consider the complex chemical reactions taking place in a single plant leaf, converting sunlight into usable energy in a process we don’t fully understand and can’t even begin to replicate. Or the vast mats of fungi under the forest floor, somehow (we don’t know how) communicating from one side to the other. Or the incredibly complex muscular movements of my fingers and the communication happening between my fingers and my brain as I type this. Or the complex language and information system that is DNA, the code of life. It’s astounding. And yet, to many people, none of that is considered evidence of a Creator—but a sort-of half square is obvious evidence of intelligence!

It’s a reminder that everyone knows deep down that there is a Creator but people suppress the truth in unrighteousness (see Romans 1). They want to see any evidence for aliens because the idea excites them and fits with their evolutionary worldview. But the obvious fingerprints of the Designer are ignored because if God exists, then we must obey him—and sinful hearts don’t want that!

So what is that square on Mars? Well, it’s a reminder of the sinful pride of the human heart and the rejection of the God who made everything and loves us so much he gave his very life for us.
