It is with sadness that I report the death of prominent flat-earther Rob Skiba. I met Rob at the first Flat Earth International Convention in 2017, where he was one of the featured speakers. Even though we disagreed on many issues, Rob always treated me kindly. He was a gentleman. This is proof that people can disagree without being disagreeable.
Unfortunately, there have been many rude comments made on the internet about Rob’s passing. Why the venom? Rob died after weeks of being hospitalized for COVID-19. Many of the critical comments about Rob have focused on his positions about COVID-19 and the COVID-19 vaccinations. They basically say that Rob got what he deserved, and they are glad to see him gone. Besides being very disrespectful, hurtful, and without class, such expressions are wrong. Proverbs 24:17 says,
Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, and let not your heart be glad when he stumbles.
Job 31:28–30 goes even further, calling such an attitude a sin:
If I have rejoiced at the ruin of him who hated me, or exulted when evil overtook him (I have not let my mouth sin by asking for his life with a curse).
We should never rejoice at death. Death is everyone’s enemy, but praise God that Christ has defeated it. I have sympathy for Rob’s wife and sons. While Rob and I disagreed on the earth’s shape and other things, he was a model of how we ought to treat each other as we discuss our differences. I truly will miss him.
