There will likely be at least one child who attends your VBS for just one day. This one day of VBS may be the child’s first and only introduction to Jesus. Did every one of those minutes he spent at your VBS count?
Each moment of your vacation Bible school must intentionally point kids to Jesus.
Each moment of your vacation Bible school must intentionally point kids to Jesus. Your teaching and worship time is designed to teach God’s Word and point kids to Jesus, as are the crafts, games, and science experiments. But what about all of those other minutes?
What happens while kids are being dropped off before service starts? How can you intentionally use those 10 or 20 minutes to point kids to Jesus? Consider having worship music playing on the screens or having small group leaders engage the kids with the day’s Bible verse.
Yes, the snack includes a teaching tie-in, and you most likely have prayer time before the snack, but what is happening while the kids eat? Even those 10 or 15 minutes that the kids are eating can count. Are there extra adults who can build relationships with the kids, engaging them and loving on them with the love of Jesus? Would the memory verse songs be an asset if played in the background during snack time?
This may seem odd to discuss in this context, but leader attitudes can set the mood for your program, so this is a vital area to encourage intentionality. Your VBS team is showing Jesus to the child visiting for a day, not just through the lessons taught and the songs sung, but through their actions. Every team member should be excited that boys and girls are there—and show it with their words, facial expressions, and body language. They need to show that they are glad the child has come to VBS and welcome them warmly into the group.
Our kids need to know that they are known by and loved by God. This starts with you! Take time to get to know the boys and girls at VBS this year. Learn their names. Listen to them when they talk. Let them know they matter to you, your church, and most importantly to God.
You might not even realize your opportunity to show Jesus to a boy or girl in these seemingly small moments.
There is a lot of amazing content provided with Answers VBS programs. Everything in the starter or super starter kit, from the classroom lessons to the games, intentionally teaches and reinforces the lesson. That’s a huge part of making your VBS minutes count, but don’t forget the small moments as well. You might not even realize your opportunity to show Jesus to a boy or girl in these seemingly small moments. Each minute counts.
Take a few moments today, right now, and evaluate your VBS. Are you making each moment count? If a child only attends your VBS for one day, did you point him or her to Jesus through every person and in every moment?
