Each year when the summer student ministry calendar comes around, do you sigh just a little when you see “VBS” listed?

Does the idea of recruiting volunteers to work “yet another week” of VBS leave you with rehearsed responses for the anticipated rejection you will receive?

Do you feel like you are pleading with others to attend—let alone volunteer?

This is often the attitude of so many who lead VBS. Often people ask themselves, “Is it even worth doing VBS this year for the attendance we get?” I am here to tell you—it is! Do NOT be discouraged!

Think of VBS as an opportunity to show even just one child the love of Christ!

Instead of thinking about a mountain of work, countless volunteer rejections, and pleading with families to register, think of VBS as an opportunity to show even just one child the love of Christ! You won’t know who that is; you probably won't be able to pick them out of a crowd. But God can. He knows who needs to hear the redeeming message of the gospel taught in VBS.

Now pause for a moment—he has chosen YOU to help deliver that message. You have been chosen to recruit and ask others to join you in this journey. God doesn’t call the equipped, he equips the called.

I challenge you to rethink how you view VBS. What if your VBS wasn’t a chore or a task? Of all the people around you serving in church, it was YOU whom God chose for this position this year.

“And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14).

If your view of why you do VBS is different, others will follow your lead and view it differently as well.

VBS starts with “U” (You).
