How can you help kids travel back in time to the medieval era, a time of knights, dragons, and castles, as they discover the armor of God? By transforming your church into a medieval castle with awesome decorations, of course.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Transform one hallway into a dragon’s lair with a big pile of loot. Stack different-sized cardboard boxes on top of each other and cover them by stapling gold and silver cellophane onto the cardboard in an alternating pattern. Add some jewels and sparkly beaded jewelry scattered over the covered boxes.
  • Add patches of bricks to a cardboard wall by dipping a rectangular sponge in grey paint and pressing it against the cardboard in groups of two, three, or four.
  • Take grey copy paper and stagger it around a doorframe to look like a stone entrance. Use painter’s tape to avoid pulling paint off the wall when you remove the paper.
  • Roll up black construction paper into a cone and stuff it with yellow and orange tissue paper to make torches to attach along a hallway or by a classroom door.
  • Cut rolled plastic tablecloths of various colors into flag shapes and tuck them into a drop ceiling.
  • Use various colors of tissue paper and black electrical tape to make a stained-glass window over one of your regular church windows (this is a great project for teens to work on). Or print the stained-glass window pattern from the digital resources to make windows down a hallway.
