The Bible indicates in several places that the universe has been “stretched out” or expanded (see below for a brief list). For example, the prophet Isaiah taught that God stretches out the heavens like a curtain and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in (Isaiah 40:22). This would suggest that the universe has actually increased in size since its creation. God is stretching it out, causing it to expand. Secular scientists once believed that the universe was eternal and unchanging. However, most astronomers today believe that the universe is indeed expanding. In the 1920s, astronomers discovered that virtually all clusters of galaxies appear to be moving away from all other clusters; this indicates that the entire universe is expanding.
Psalm 104:2:
Who cover Yourself with light as with a garment, Who stretch out the heavens like a curtain.
Isaiah 42:5:
Thus says God the LORD, Who created the heavens and stretched them out, Who spread forth the earth and that which comes from it, Who gives breath to the people on it, And spirit to those who walk on it:
Isaiah 44:24:
Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, And He who formed you from the womb: “ I am the LORD, who makes all things, Who stretches out the heavens all alone, Who spreads abroad the earth by Myself;”
Jeremiah 10:12:
He has made the earth by His power, He has established the world by His wisdom, And has stretched out the heavens at His discretion.
