One good thing to come out of the COVID-19 pandemic is families spending more time together. Due to various mandates and school closings, the number of homeschooled students in America has risen dramatically. Census data revealed that over 11% of US households with school-age children are now homeschooling—twice the number that homeschooled before the pandemic, meaning an increase of 2.6 million new homeschool students. Another report found that 8.7 million children have been moved from public schools to private schools during the pandemic.
Parents are speaking out about the positive difference that homeschooling has made in their family, reporting that it has changed their perspectives and encouraged them to take a more proactive approach in their children’s education. Homeschooling has allowed parents to spend more time with their kids, set their own schedule and pace, and tailor their children’s education according to their individual needs. Not all parents are planning to continue homeschooling, but those sending their children back to school still plan to be more involved.
Although the pandemic has been a difficult time, it’s encouraging to hear how families have come together in ways that they hadn’t before.
All too often, school and media are the most influential voices in a child’s life. But God’s Word makes it clear that parents have the primary responsibility to “train up a child in the way he should go” (Proverbs 22:6) and bring their children up “in the training and admonition of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4, NKJV).
Answers in Genesis (AiG) offers many tools to help parents provide a Bible-based education and family discipleship for their children. These resources can be equally helpful to homeschool, public school, and private school families who want to give their children an education with a biblical worldview.
At the upcoming Answers in Genesis national homeschool conference, Building Strong Foundations: A Family Homeschool Experience, parents will learn how to better incorporate science, apologetics, critical thinking, and the gospel into their children’s education. This conference will be held May 12–14, 2022, at the Ark Encounter in Williamstown, Kentucky. Learn more and register online at AnswersInGenesis.org.
