King David once wrote a song (a “psalm”) praising God for his omniscience (God is all-knowing) and his omnipresence (God is everywhere). In this psalm, David sings about how God knew him even before he was born and that it was God that “fearfully and wonderfully” knit David together while he was growing in his mother’s womb. You can read all twenty-four verses of this beautiful song by going to Psalm 139 in your Bible.
When David wrote this song, it wasn’t just David writing his own thoughts. The Bible tells us that all Scripture is “breathed out by God.” The Bible is the very words of our God! So God himself says that he makes us “fearfully and wonderfully” from the very beginning.
The Sanctity of Life
When is the beginning? When do you become… you? Some people think it’s when you were born. Others think maybe it’s when your heart started beating or your brain started thinking. Do we know?
Well, the Bible always describes unborn babies as persons. David was David, being knit together by God, long before he was born. This means, when we start with the Bible, you become you as soon as you exist! And when you exist is a moment called fertilization. Fertilization is when two special cells come together and make a totally unique person! So you were you—fearfully and wonderfully made by God—from the very beginning.
Now we live in a world that’s broken because of sin. In this world, people sin against God and do horrible things to other people. Sin is awful and has very sad consequences!
One sin that happens in our broken world is called “abortion.” Abortion is when someone kills an unborn baby. Sadly, this happens all around the world, every day, and is legal in most countries. Abortion is horrible and should make us very sad because God’s Word says, “you shall not murder” (Exodus 20:13).
The Bible tells us that we should stand up for those who cannot speak and defend themselves. As Christians, we need to do what we can to stop abortion. We need to love moms, dads, and babies, and most importantly, tell everyone about Jesus, who forgives all our sins and loves us so much.
Open your mouth for the mute,
for the rights of all who are destitute.
Open your mouth, judge righteously,
defend the rights of the poor and needy. (Proverbs 31:8–9)
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9)
