Hi! Welcome back to the Kids Answers magazine blog, where we answer your big questions about God’s Word and God’s world.

Arthur (grade 5) asked,

“What is nuclear fission?”

Thank you for your great question, Arthur!

God made this world with lots of tiny particles called atoms. Atoms make up everything: trees, oceans, even your hand! An atom is so small that we cannot see it, even with a microscope. And atoms are built with even smaller “blocks” called protons, electrons, and neutrons.

Nuclear fission happens when an atom is hit with a neutron and breaks into protons, electrons, and neutrons. When atoms are broken apart, they release energy.

Scientists have figured out how to use the energy created by nuclear fission to power homes and businesses. This process happens in nuclear power plants where uranium atoms are hit with neutrons to split them apart.

Our creative God designed the world with intricate detail like tiny atoms for us to discover. When we use the resources that God has given us in a wise way, it brings glory to him.

Do you have a question about God’s Word or his world that you want us to answer? Is there a topic you want to learn more about? Ask your parents to help you submit your question today. Watch for our answer here on the blog or in Kids Answers magazine. We’d love to hear from you!
