Hi! Welcome back to the Kids Answers magazine blog, where we answer your big questions about God’s Word and God’s world.

Sam asked,

“What is the largest star in the universe?”

Thanks for your question!

Currently, the largest star in the universe that we know of is called UY Scuti. This star is in the center of our galaxy, the Milky Way. It is about 9,500 light-years away from earth. UY Scuti is about 1,700 times larger than the earth’s sun. That means about 5 billion suns could fit inside UY Scuti!

The magnitude of the stars is pretty amazing, huh? When we look up at the night sky, we can thank our powerful God for creating the sun, moon, and stars on the fourth day of creation.

Starry Facts

  • UY Scuti is classified as a red supergiant star.
  • The closest star to earth (besides the sun) is about 4.2 light-years away.
  • A star called Sirius is the brightest star that we see in the night sky.
