Hi! Welcome back to the Kids Answers magazine blog, where we answer your big questions about God’s Word and God’s world.
In the January–March issue of Kids Answers, Andy and Eva Wander discovered Yooperlite treasure on the shore of Lake Superior. What exactly is Yooperlite?
Yooperlite is a special kind of rock that contains a fluorescent (flaw-REH-sent) mineral called sodalite. The sodalite makes the rock glow like fire under certain kinds of light.
Yooperlite is mostly found along the shores of Lake Superior, but you need a special UV light to find it.
About 4,500 years ago, God judged humankind's sin by sending a worldwide flood to destroy the earth. Yooperlite probably formed at the start of the global flood when catastrophic volcanic eruptions heated the waters the Bible describes as “the fountains of the great deep” (Genesis 7:11). Then during the post-flood ice age, when the temperatures cooled, glaciers moved the rocks all around the Great Lakes area.
Interesting things like Yooperlite are all around us and give us wonderful glimpses of our God’s creativity!
