What Does Heaven Look Like?

on February 26, 2025

Hi! Welcome back to the Kids Answers magazine blog, where we answer your big questions about God’s Word and God’s world.

Paiten H. (age 10) asked, “What does heaven look like?”

Good question, Paiten.

The Bible doesn’t tell us a lot about what heaven looks like, though Scripture says it is a perfect place of unimaginable beauty. Let’s dive into God’s Word to find out more.

First, let’s read Matthew 6:9. It says, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.” Next, let’s read Revelation 5:8–10, which depicts a future scene in heaven.

And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. And they sang a new song, saying,

“Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.”

From these verses, we learn that heaven is a place where God’s throne is, where Jesus is, and where there is music and worship. And in Revelation 21, we get a glimpse of what the new heavens and new earth will look like:

He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away. (Revelation 21:4)

When God restores his creation, the effects of our sin-cursed world will be no more. As this verse says, there will be no more crying or pain.

Let’s keep reading.

And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. It had a great, high wall, with twelve gates. . . . The wall was built of jasper, while the city was pure gold, like clear glass. The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with every kind of jewel. . . . And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the gates made of a single pearl, and the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass. (Revelation 21:10–12, 18–21)

In these verses and in the following chapter, we see the new heaven is a beautiful city with jewels, a street of gold, the tree of life, and crystal-clear living water.

For now, we know that Jesus is preparing a place for us, and though we don’t know exactly what heaven will look like, we know that it is a beautiful, perfect place that we can’t even imagine. If you are a follower of Jesus, one day you will get to enjoy living in the presence of God forever.
