Spotted Hyena

Some consider the hyena to be the link between cats and dogs. But this is not true since the cat and the dog are two separate kinds of animals; there is no transition between them. Spotted hyenas hunt their prey in groups of two to five; this allows them to bring down a larger animal. This hunting instinct was not part of their behavior until after the Fall, since all animals were originally created to eat plants.

Features

  • The spotted hyena is often tan or reddish brown with dark brown or black spots over its body. It has a black nose and tail. The spots of the older hyenas are drastically faded, compared to the darker spots of the young.
  • The spotted hyena is nocturnal and lives in holes in the ground, in caves, or in lairs in dense vegetation.

Fun Facts

  • The spotted hyena can digest bone, horn, and teeth.
  • This animal is also known as the laughing hyena for the call it makes.
  • The lifespan of the spotted hyena is about 25 years.
  • The female weighs more than the male.
