One of our readers asked,

Is bigfoot real? Could the Loch Ness Monster be Leviathan?

Thanks for your question! It can be fun to imagine that bigfoot is real. But there’s no scientific evidence for his existence. Although some people do believe in the legend, and there have been reported sightings, most experts agree there’s no real proof for bigfoot. We’ve never found any bones, DNA, or other hard evidence. All we really have are unreliable reports and blurry photos. These sightings and footprints probably come from pranks, misidentified animals, or wishful thinking.

There’s no solid evidence for the Loch Ness Monster either, just unreliable reported sightings. If Nessie was real, she would probably be considered a plesiosaur. Some people have wondered if Leviathan was a plesiosaur. But the Bible describes Leviathan as a semiaquatic creature that not only lived in the sea but could also venture up onto the land. The description of Leviathan in Job 41 doesn’t totally describe Nessie’s supposed appearance. And these verses seem to refer to Leviathan as a creature that is not on earth today.

Many plesiosaurs and dinosaurs died during the global flood of Noah’s day, and more died out during the ice age that followed the flood. Even if a plesiosaur had survived these events, it’s unlikely that it could survive in a lake ever since then. It’s more likely that people have mistaken other animals for the Loch Ness Monster. For example, grey seals have long necks and paddle-like fins.

It is fun and interesting to imagine what creatures such as Leviathan were like, and who knows—maybe when Jesus returns and makes all things new, some of the original animals God made will be part of the new heaven and earth (Revelation 21:1–5). We can only imagine!

Verses to Read: Job 41; Psalm 104:24–26
