All in a Day’s Work

Dr. Bonita Montes believes that Christian schools must present the creation message clearly and unwaveringly if they want to produce strong, well-grounded graduates.

“Today could be the last day of my life. What can I do for my Lord?”

This is the life principle that drives Dr. Bonita Montes, director of Cornerstone Christian School in Baybay City, Leyte (Philippines), and lecturer for the Creation Science Evangelism Training Institute there.

Having earned her doctorate in management, Bonita served in the Philippine government, including several years as a national trainer. After almost twenty years she made the difficult decision to retire and go into full-time ministry.

According to Bonita, teaching the creation message to the young is critical if we want to reach them. Once students have spent years being told that evolution is true, they tend to hold on to evolutionary beliefs. But younger students, if they are taught creation well, will cling to the truth. To spread the creation message among children, Bonita designs curricula for elementary grades.

Bonita believes that Christian schools must present the creation message clearly and unwaveringly if they want to produce strong, well-grounded graduates. She hopes to one day host creation conferences for school administrators throughout the Philippines.

Bonita also lectures in both Christian and public schools. Government schools in the Philippines are more open to evangelism in classrooms than those in America. Many students are very receptive and come to her with penetrating questions, such as “Did God create sin?” and “Will I commit sin if I study evolution in school?” She tells students to learn evolution for class but also never to be afraid to present the truth when the opportunity arises.

“We must get out of our comfort zone to obey the Master, even when it’s very inconvenient,” she says. The verse that compels Bonita’s work is 1 Corinthians 15:58, which says, “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.”
