Have you ever thought about heaven? Will you see loved ones and live in a gigantic mansion? Will you run on streets of gold or float on clouds and play a harp all day? Some people talk about heaven like it’s an imaginary place, but the Bible says it’s real!
Even though the Bible doesn’t tell us a lot about heaven, we can learn several important, fun facts about it from the pages of God’s Word.
Some kids don’t like the nighttime because they are afraid of the dark. But there’s no night or darkness in heaven! Revelation 22:5 says, “And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light.” Just imagine a world where it is always daytime! We will always be in the glorious light of God’s presence (Revelation 21:23).
The Bible says that after God creates a new heaven and new earth, he will wipe away all tears from our eyes, “and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, no crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things are passed away” (Revelation 21:1, 4). While we’re on this broken earth, we sin, even after we put our faith in Jesus Christ. The first man and woman, Adam and Eve, sinned. Because they sinned, we all sin too. It’s sin that brings death, disease, and crying. But when God gives us our new bodies, we will no longer sin.
When God created the world in Genesis 1, it was “very good” (Genesis 1:31). But then Adam and Eve sinned, and God cursed the earth. The Bible teaches us that God will one day destroy the earth and create a new heaven and new earth. In Revelation 21:1 Jesus revealed the future heaven to the Apostle John. He wrote, “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away.” All those who’ve put their faith in Jesus Christ will live in heaven safely with him with no possible sin in the future.
There are no hunger pains and starvation in heaven, but there is food. Yum! God gave Adam and Eve food to eat in the garden before they sinned. Like Adam and Eve, we will enjoy wonderful food in heaven forever (Revelation 22:2).
The Bible says that Jesus “will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body” (Philippians 3:21). Some people think we will turn into angels, but that is not what the Bible says. We don’t know what our transformed bodies will look like, but we do know that we will recognize each other.
When our loved ones die, we miss them, but we know that we will see them again if Jesus is their Savior. That’s one of the great comforts of heaven. We will enjoy the company of family members and friends who have repented of their sin and trusted in Christ, just as Abraham is enjoying his son Isaac and grandson Jacob (Matthew 8:11).
Floating on a cloud and playing a harp all day for eternity sounds pretty boring. But God is the opposite of boredom. We see his love for creativity in his vast creation. Remember: God created us in his own image. God is creative, and he created us to be creative as well. In heaven, we will likely continue to do creative things, even more exciting than anything we do right now like drawing or making paper airplanes.
Many people worry that heaven will be boring because they don’t know what they will be doing there. We know that we will spend a lot of time singing praises to God, but it’s very likely that we will have jobs to do, too. Remember, God gave Adam and Eve work to do before they sinned. Sin made the work hard and less enjoyable. In heaven, we will find fulfillment and joy in our work, and it won’t be hard or stressful . . . or boring.
This is the most important fact about heaven. We will see God’s glory and worship him with the angels and heavenly creatures (Revelation 7:11–12). When we get to heaven, we will have perfect love for God. We will worship him in full happiness and will never want to stop. What a day that will be!
