As you prepare for the school year, take a moment to ask yourself an important question:

What will my students hear about my subject on the very first day?

Most Christian educators weave biblical principles and spiritual application throughout their lessons. But we often skip an essential step—we teach biblical integration without first laying the biblical foundation for the subject itself.

At Answers Academy (Answers in Genesis’ K–12 school), we intentionally begin every subject by asking, “Why is this subject possible?” Before students learn formulas, scientific laws, grammar rules, historical events, artistic techniques, or business principles, they first learn how that discipline is based on the character of God and His Word.

Just as importantly, we help students understand that every subject must be viewed through the historical framework of Genesis 1–11. These chapters are not merely an introduction to the Bible; they provide the true history of the world and the foundation for understanding every academic discipline. We do not live in the perfect world God originally created. We live in a sin-cursed, post-Flood world, and everything we observe today has been affected by mankind’s rebellion and God’s judgment. Disease, death, suffering, broken relationships, environmental decay, and even the way we interpret evidence only make sense when understood through the lens of creation, the Fall, the global Flood, and Babel. If students are not first grounded in this framework, they will inevitably interpret the world through someone else’s worldview.

• Mathematics exists because God is a God of order, consistency, and logic.
• Science is possible because God faithfully upholds His creation in a consistent way that allows observation and investigation. We all have the same evidence (oceans, mountains, fossils, rock layers, etc.), but the way it is interpreted is based on our starting point, and we start with the truth of God’s Word.
• History begins in Genesis 1:1, where God, the perfect eyewitness, records the true account of the past. Thus, the idea of something being “prehistoric” is false. Genesis 1–11 provides the basic history for understanding the origin of the universe, earth, mankind, sin, death, the global Flood, and the Tower of Babel. These chapters explain death and suffering and the origin of nations and language groups, and they remind us that all people—no matter what we look like—are ultimately related back to Adam and Eve through Noah’s family and equally bear God’s image.
• Literature reflects mankind’s God-given ability to communicate and reveals the worldview of its author.
• Logic is predicated on God’s unchanging, truthful nature.
• Fine arts reflects the creativity of our Creator.
• Health and fitness begins with understanding creation, the Fall, the curse, and our responsibility to steward the bodies God has given us.
• Business and economics flows from God’s command to exercise wise dominion and faithfully steward His resources.

When students understand these foundations first, they don’t merely learn a subject—they understand why the subject exists and how it reflects God and His Word. It also helps students understand how to faithfully interpret the world around them through the lens of God’s Word.

This simple shift changes everything. Instead of adding Bible verses to a lesson, we begin with God’s Word as the framework itself. Rather than merely integrating biblical principles into a subject, we establish the biblical foundation that makes the subject possible in the first place.

Every lesson that follows has a place to connect because students already understand the biblical foundation that undergirds the discipline (science, logic, history, etc.).

As you prepare for another school year, don’t just think about your classroom procedures or your first unit of instruction. Consider how you will establish the biblical foundation of your subject from day one and how to keep recalling it as you go through the semester. Those first lessons shape the way students view that discipline for the rest of the year and perhaps for the rest of their lives.

After all, true biblical worldview begins with a solid foundation.
