When the School Year Feels Long: A Call to Faithful Finishing

by Ann Rill on March 19, 2026

As the academic year nears its end, Christian educators feel the weight of added responsibilities—grading piles up, calendars fill, and fatigue sets in. The temptation to simply get through this last quarter is strong. But Scripture reminds us that this is not a season of disengagement but an opportunity to faithfully finish the task set before us.

As we navigate these final months, we can be encouraged by the Apostle Paul’s words: “Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful” (1 Corinthians 4:2). Teaching is a stewardship, and each lesson planned, each assignment evaluated, and each student supported fulfills your role as a steward. Whether it is the first or last lesson, evaluation, or word of encouragement, all are equally important.

Remember the Mission

Christian education is more than transferring information; it shapes minds and hearts. When exhaustion tempts us to lower our standards or disengage, Scripture reminds us, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men” (Colossians 3:23). Our audience is ultimately the Lord. Teach with excellence and purpose, remembering the higher calling involved.

Paul encourages, “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9). Perseverance matters. Some students may still be struggling. Encouragement or thoughtful feedback can make a lasting impression. By remaining diligent, we model integrity and show that excellence is not seasonal.

Model Perseverance

Our students observe far more than our teaching abilities. They watch our demeanor, our tone, and our consistency. These final weeks of the year are a testimony of endurance. Paul’s words to Timothy are fitting: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7). Finishing well matters.

When energy declines or frustration rises, we have the opportunity to demonstrate steadfastness to our work (1 Corinthians 15:58). Steadfastness is not frenzied; it is calm, consistent faithfulness. It requires that we guard our speech, maintain patience, and resist cynicism as we interact with our students, recognizing our responsibility to communicate Christlike maturity to those who may also be tempted to disengage.

Shepherd the Final Moments Well

The last interactions with our students are often the ones that linger the longest. Our role as educators is not just the role of stewards but also that of shepherds. Peter’s exhortation to the elders to “shepherd the flock of God that is among you” (1 Peter 5:2) is a principle that should be applied broadly in Christian education.

The final moments of your course can shape students’ perceptions. Affirming growth and encouraging perseverance beyond the classroom may help a student stay the course. Publicly, close your course with gratitude, not just relief at finishing. Encouraging reflection can help students recognize how God has worked in your classroom and school.

Finish with Gratitude and Reflection

Educators can personally benefit greatly from pausing to acknowledge God’s faithfulness. Scripture commands us, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Even the most difficult of weeks, grading periods, and even years contain evidence of God’s grace—personal growth, conversations that mattered, moments of insight, or students who matured.

As the psalmist declared, “The Lord has done great things for us; we are glad” (Psalm 126:3). While reflecting alone can foster gratitude, reflecting with those we served with this year can encourage and deepen our sense of purpose. By acknowledging blessings and answered prayers, we remember the “why” of our calling and close out the year reminded that our work in the Lord is never in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58).

Be steadfast and finish well, knowing that your faithful work has lasting meaning beyond the classroom.

Although the school year may be ending, the eternal impact of your work continues. Faithfulness in seasons of weariness honors Christ. As you finish this year, remember: Be steadfast and finish well, knowing that your faithful work has lasting meaning beyond the classroom.
