Finish Strong: Finding Purpose in the Final Days of School

by Brittany Hurd on May 19, 2025

As the school year winds down, you may feel torn between the anticipation of summer’s rest and the determination to finish well. Both feelings are real, and both have their place. But before we rush toward the finish line, let’s take a breath and lean into what God may want to do in these final days—not just through your students, but through you as well.

Finish Strong

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. (Galatians 6:9)

These last few days matter. They hold as much value and potential as the first ones did. Every smile, encouraging word, correction done in love, act of patience—it is all sowing seeds in the hearts and minds of these young lives you taught each day this year.

Yes, they are tired and so are you, but don’t underestimate the impact of these final impressions you leave in their minds forever. Your energy, encouragement, and intentionality reach further than the classroom and stay with your students for years to come.

Pour love into your students. Tell them what they have done right. Remind them that their identity isn’t in their grades but in who God created them to be. God asks that we do our best and finish strong.

Be careful not to wish the days away. Each day left of school is an opportunity to leave an impact on your students, colleagues, and school families. Be present. Be intentional. Be overflowing with the joy of the Lord.

Celebrate Growth

Look around your classroom. That student who once struggled to write a paragraph? They’re drafting essays now. The quiet kid who wouldn’t speak up? You saw their hand raised three times this week. The student who always turned work in late? They submitted the recent assignment on time—and with pride.

Look at your own teaching as well! Did you try new tech tools, implement new classroom management strategies, or mentor a student or colleague? The list can go on and on. It’s easy to remember the things that did not go as planned, but those were learning opportunities for you to be flexible, adjust, and try again in a different way.

Both you and your students have grown! Take time to recognize and celebrate this growth.

Dream Forward

Rest is coming, and you deserve it. But summer isn’t just for rest and recovery; it is also for reflection, vision, and planning. This doesn’t mean all of your lessons are planned and submitted by June or every little detail in each project, test, bulletin board, or classroom decoration is planned for next year. But it does mean taking what God has taught you this year and letting it shape your next year.

Reflect. What went well this year? Where did God grow you? What would you like to do differently next year? What can you do this summer to make things easier when August rolls around?

Begin asking God to prepare you and your students for the upcoming school year. Each precious face that enters your classroom will be there for a purpose. Each day they are with you is a day to make a lasting impact on their lives. Ask God to guide your words, actions, thoughts, motives, and heart as you play a part in training up the next generation for Christ.

Keep Going

As you navigate these final days, hold on to the truth that your work has eternal value. Every lesson, every prayer whispered over your students, every effort made in love—it all matters. You’ve planted seeds this year, and while you may not see every harvest, trust that God is at work in ways you can’t always see.

So finish strong, not in your own strength, but in his. Celebrate growth, reflect with gratitude, and step into the coming summer with both rest and anticipation. God isn’t finished—not with your students, and certainly not with you.

You are making a difference. Keep going.
