Recently, my daughter chose to help local crisis pregnancy centers for a service project. Part of the project was to call the centers and ask how to help and what they needed. One center allowed the older girls participating in the project to come up and help them count change from their baby bottle drives, where baby bottles are filled with loose change and returned to the pregnancy center. Many churches, including ours, offer this ministry to their congregation. They also said that other volunteers helped them label bottles for the drives and other such tasks that freed them up to focus on their ministry.
She said that 70% of the women who saw their baby on the ultrasound chose life for their baby.1
After the girls had counted all the change, the administrator took us on a tour of the center and shared some sobering statistics about their services, which included ultrasounds. She said that 70% of the women who saw their baby on the ultrasound chose life for their baby.1 Some of the girls and leaders were visibly moved by this, both by the thought that these centers were encouraging these women to do the right thing for themselves and their child while literally saving many lives—praise the Lord—but also by the thought that 30% still chose to go to a clinic that would end the life of their child after seeing him or her. We must do what we can to change that! While it was hard to watch some of these teenage girls process these things, I know it was something that they needed to understand, and I pray it helps them make good decisions for themselves and makes them pray for these women and their babies.
The administrator also shared with us how they offer abstinence talks at local or religious schools that would allow it, pregnancy and STD tests, counseling, parenting classes, supplies, and referrals to adoption, housing, and prenatal services. Many centers also offer post-abortion counseling, help for those who change their mind after taking the “abortion pill” (discussing medications that can reverse the pill and save the child’s life), and help for those who have been trafficked. These centers provide vital, lifesaving care to women, their unborn children, and the community. This particular center recently relocated along a bus line and, like most centers, has some trouble keeping up with the growing demand for their services and free supplies.
Another center we aided is located across the street from a Planned Parenthood. Their very location, I’m sure, has saved many lives, just as the relocation of the other. For this center, we asked our church if we could put a container out in the foyer and an announcement in the bulletin that we were collecting items for a pregnancy center for a few weeks. This center indicated there was always a need for in-season clothing size 2T or smaller, diapers, wipes, and formula. We used a new hamper, decorated it, asked for these items in the bulletin, and then waited for the generosity of our fellow believers. They didn’t disappoint! We filled that hamper to overflowing several times!
Don’t assume that everyone at your church has a biblical view of life! Talk to your pastor and church leadership about teaching these concepts from Scripture and bolstering your church library or pamphlet/information rack. Answers in Genesis has many resources on our website for free, and our online bookstore has much to offer as well. Here are a few great places to start:
These centers are saving lives but pray that God saves souls there as well.
Since it is Sanctity of Life Day, why not consider a way to help these centers at the front lines in helping women choose love and life and saving babies today? You don’t have to donate money or items, though those are always helpful. If your children need to do community service projects, research your local centers and try to find one that also ministers to the spiritual needs of these women, then consider setting up volunteer time. Shop at the end of a season and at thrift stores to get good prices on new and gently used seasonal items to donate the following year. Set up collection bins at your church or place of business. Most importantly, pray! These centers are saving lives but pray that God saves souls there as well.
