Evolution vs. God

In this fallen world, the battle being fought is one of authority. Will we look to God’s Word for answers? Or will we look to man and his changing, fallible opinions as the highest authority? Nothing better exemplifies this battle than the debate over our origins. In his newest film, Evolution vs. God, Ray Comfort, founder and president of Living Waters, brings to light the way evolutionary ideas are manifestations of a deeper problem. This underscores how many professors and students in the American university system are willfully ignorant of the truth of God’s Word, and how important it is for Christians to equip themselves and their families to give answers to the skeptical claims of our day.

“Did God Really Say . . . ?”

Today, Christians are witnessing firsthand the “Genesis 3 attack” of our age. In Evolution vs. God, the issue is framed around the origins debate: Did the universe and the life in it come about by chance processes, or were they created by the God of the Bible? Secularists’ acceptance of evolutionary processes and their attack on the Genesis account of creation point to a larger problem. It reveals that man is still rebelling in the same way Adam rebelled in the Garden of Eden. Man is being faced with the question, “‘Did God really say . . . ?” (Genesis 3:1, NIV) and answering with a resounding, “No!”

Willfully Ignorant

In Evolution vs. God, the unwavering commitment of the professors and students to evolutionary ideas, in spite of the clear lack of observable, repeatable evidence, is revealing. For example, when asked to present an observable example of one animal kind evolving into another, the professors and students all failed to do so. In the examples they put forward as support, fish are still fish, birds are still birds, and bacteria are still bacteria. And yet the interviewees remained committed to the idea of evolution, despite having no observable support for its claims.

We should not be surprised by such responses from secularists. Peter reminds us, “For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water” (2 Peter 3:5–6, emphasis added). Evolution vs. God highlights how millions of years and evolutionary ideas are a manifestation of the willful ignorance that pervades society today.

Equipped to Give an Answer

One of the most shocking moments in Evolution vs. God occurs when the interviewees are given a choice: Their dog and their neighbor are drowning—whom do they save?

Moral absolutes rooted in the Word of God are rejected by many in our culture.

For the Christian, whose foundation is the Word of God, the decision is already made. Man is made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27) and should be rescued over an animal. But for the unbeliever, who has no real moral foundation, the decision leads to hesitation and anguish—and interviewees over and over again chose to save their dog and allow their neighbor to drown. This simple example demonstrates that moral absolutes rooted in the Word of God are rejected by many in our culture.

If you were speaking to an unbeliever and were faced with similar answers, how would you respond? Would you be able to easily identify the weaknesses and contradictions in an evolutionary worldview? Peter instructs Christians to “always be ready to give a defense to everyone who ask you a reason for the hope that is in you” (1 Peter 3:14–17). The word for defense in Greek is apologia, which is where the English word apologetics comes from, a reasoned defense of the faith that points to the hope believers have in Christ.

Apologetics That Preaches the Gospel

Evolution vs. God makes clear the need for training in apologetics, both in the home and in the church. Many arguments from skeptics are easily answered when we are well versed in the Scriptures and understand how to respond to the unbeliever as we point to Christ as Lord and Savior. By using the same starting point that God’s Word does—Creation—we can remove the obstacles that prevent many people from accepting the Bible and the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ as the truth.
