Dragons: Dinosaurs in History?

The student should understand the history behind dinosaur discoveries and the word dinosaur.

Introduction

Teachers should read the Scripture and text for each lesson prior to teaching it. You should be able to answer the questions below prior to asking them of the student. We have included page numbers from the text where answers are found. Extra understanding can be gained by reading the footnotes for this section.

Purpose

The student should understand the history behind dinosaur discoveries and the word dinosaur.

Lesson

Have the student read Scripture out loud. Have student read the text, pp. 34–39.

Questions

  1. Dragons are mentioned throughout the Old Testament. They are also mentioned in ancient literature of various cultures. Research some of these “legends” and record the descriptions of the “dragons” mentioned—do these descriptions match with the creatures we call “dinosaurs” today?
  2. What else can you find out about Baryonyx?

Conclusion

Dragons, as well as dinosaurs, are creatures traditionally shrouded in myth and mystery. However, the two are probably one and the same, and the Bible addresses them as real animals that lived alongside of man.
