The Foundation of . . . Everything!

All the important doctrines are introduced in Genesis!

One of the points I include in some of my presentations is that if a Christian wants to deal with any issue—yes, any issue—they must start with the foundational information revealed in the first 11 chapters of Genesis.

Genesis 1–11 is the foundation for everything.

Genesis 1–11 is the foundation for everything.

Think about it. All of our thinking has a foundation, and ultimately, there are only two foundations, God’s Word and man’s word. The first major exhibits at the Creation Museum help people understand this.

But we need to go further. Not only is God’s Word the foundation for all our thinking as Christians, but Genesis 1–11 is the foundation for the rest of the Bible, for our Christian worldview, for all doctrine, and, in fact, for everything.

Genesis 1–11 tells us the origin of all the basic entities of life and the universe. And the meaning of anything is dependent on its origin.

Take any topic. For instance:

  • Abortion. We need to start with Genesis and the information found there. God created life, and humans were made in God’s image. Humans are not to murder other humans. This is the foundation to begin to deal with abortion.

  • Fossils. In Genesis 6–9, we are told about the catastrophic global flood. This would have caused massive fossil formation all over the earth.

  • Marriage. God created the first marriage when he created the first man and woman, as related in Genesis 1 and 2. In Genesis 2:24, we read about the creation of marriage between one man and one woman.

  • Age of the Earth. We start at the beginning of history in Genesis 1:1, where God began to create the space-mass-time universe. He tells us he created all things in six days. The first man, Adam, was made on day six. We are told when Adam had a son and when that son had a son and so on. The Bible gives us the history so we can add up the dates and determine when the universe and life came into existence.
    Man in Grand Canyon

Awestruck during an AiG-sponsored raft trip at the Grand Canyon.

Once, when I spoke on this topic at a church, a man yelled out, “What about the doctrine of election?” I responded, “There wouldn’t be such a doctrine without the events in Genesis concerning the fall of man.”

Now, here’s a very sad aspect of all of this. Most Christian leaders have either compromised Genesis 1–11 with evolution/millions of years, ignored it, or taught that it doesn’t matter. And therein lies a major problem.

Most Christians don’t really know why they believe what they do, how to defend the Christian faith, or how to argue foundationally to be an effective witness.

Yes, Genesis 1–11 is the foundation for everything!

He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?” (Matthew 19:4–5)
