What comes to mind when you think of October 31st?

Exactly—masks and candy and trick or treat (oh my!). But did you know that long before little kids were dressing up and storing up mass quantities of tooth decay, there was an incredible event that addressed the problem of truth decay?

Nearly 500 years ago, a man named Martin Luther stood up against the corrupt religious and cultural conditions of his day. His bold actions lit a fuse that triggered the explosion called the Reformation. Because of the huge significance of what Luther accomplished, October 31st became known as Reformation Day.

Have you noticed that our nation and so many of our churches are in need of reformation these days? The godly foundations of our nation and the commitment to truth in our churches and schools are quickly crumbling under the weight of immorality, violence, science-sounding ideas, and flat-out rebellion against the God of the universe. Right and wrong have become a matter of opinion.

God’s Word tells us that “there is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death” (Proverbs 14:12, NKJV). America and the United Kingdom once shone as beacons for Christ, but they have faded into a lamp hidden under a covering of relative truth and competing worldviews . . . and we are on the fast track for a complete collapse, morally and spiritually.

So what can you do about it? Start a Bible study in school or church; ask your pastor questions about your church’s stand on the Bible’s inerrancy; talk to your unsaved friends and neighbors about the good news of the gospel; or answer questions your teachers pose in a biblical way.

You are the Luther of today, because in your hands you hold the words of God and in your soul is the power of the Holy Spirit. Are you willing to hammer His words to the door of this declining and decomposing culture? If not, carefully consider the words of Edmund Burke, who said, “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.”

Do something today in a way that adjusts your life and beliefs to the way Jesus wants you to live. That’s reformation. And it’s what will light the fuse that explodes into the reformation that today’s world so desperately needs!
