Will Death and Suffering Pass Away?

Biblical Authority Devotional: Consistency of Scripture's Message, Part 13

Scripture is consistent in its teaching about a new heaven and new earth.

And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away. (Revelation 21:4)

Today’s big question: will death and suffering pass away?

Have you ever wondered what it will be like to have no more death and suffering? For evolutionists, as long as life has existed, there has been death and suffering. In contrast, God’s Word reveals that God originally created everything perfect with no death or suffering (Deuteronomy 32:4; Genesis 1:1).

All this changed back in Garden of Eden when death and suffering—along with sin—entered the world through Adam’s sin. We all continue to suffer the effects of sin, since we are all sinners (Romans 5:12, 8:22). However, this is only temporary. Revelation 21:4 promises that there will “be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying…[nor] pain” (emphasis mine).

Jesus Christ has conquered sin and death for us, “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death” (Romans 8:2). Sadly, this is not true for people who do not receive Jesus Christ as their Savior, as they are not in the Lamb’s Book of Life (John 3:36; Revelation 21:27).

Jesus Christ has already completed his work on the Cross; however, we still “groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies” (Romans 8:23). When this happens, our bodies will be perfect. Just imagine never getting sick or never having to go to a doctor’s office again.

Even though we all deserve death, God made a way in Christ to conquer death once and for all. All of this can be summed up in Romans 6:23, which states, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Scripture is consistent in its message that through Jesus Christ, death and suffering will pass away (1 Corinthians 15:26).

Today’s big idea: death and suffering will pass away because of Jesus Christ’s work on the Cross.

What to pray: ask God to help you to be faithful to Him until the time your body is redeemed, and thank Him for His wonderful promise.
