What Was the Biggest Dinosaur?

on January 8, 2025

Hi! Welcome back to the Kids Answers magazine blog, where we answer your big questions about God’s Word and God’s world.

Artemis (age 10) asked,

“What was the biggest dinosaur?”

Thanks for your question, Artemis.

God created dinosaurs on day six of creation, about 6,000 years ago. These giants are fascinating to learn about! Paleontologists are always discovering new dinosaur bones. Sometimes, scientists don’t find enough fossilized remains to know how large a dino really was. So while we don’t know for sure which dinosaur was the largest, the biggest dinosaurs discovered are all sauropods (SAW-ruh-pods). Scientists believe sauropods were probably the largest family of land creatures to ever walk the earth. You’d probably recognize a sauropod from books and movies by its super long neck and tail and its thick legs—legs as thick as tree trunks.

Colossal Contenders

We may not know for certain which dino wins first place in a size contest, but God definitely created some giants! Here are some of the largest sauropod dinos that have been unearthed so far.

  • Patagotitan mayorum: This dinosaur might have weighed over 70 tons (as heavy as 10 African elephants!) and measured over 122 feet long.
  • Argentinosaurus: Researchers believe this giant might have been about 120 to 130 feet long and could have weighed up to 110 tons.
  • Dreadonoughtus: This dinosaur measured about 85 feet long and weighed about 65 tons.
